Winter Meeting 2017

You are invited to the Annual Grand Prairie Friends Winter Membership Meeting to be held on Friday, March 3 at 7:00 PM in the Anita Purves Nature Center (1505 N. Broadway, Urbana, IL). Catch up with friends and hear updates on the conservation work of GPF.

The special guest speaker is Brian Allan, Associate Professor of Entomology. His talk is: Exploring the Unexpected Linkages between Invasive Plants and Vector-borne Disease Risk.

Professor Allan's web site states:

"I am broadly interested in the ecology of infectious diseases, particularly diseases transmitted to humans from wildlife via the bite of an infected arthropod (e.g., ticks, mosquitoes).  Much of my research focuses on the consequences of human-mediated global change, such as climate change and human land-use, on the risk of exposure to parasites and pathogens carried by wildlife.  While I work on these questions in a wide variety of wildlife communities and disease systems, I am especially interested in understanding the effects of landscape change on the emergence and transmission of tick-borne diseases in the Midwestern United States and in East Africa.  I use a broad array of tools in approaching these questions, including molecular techniques, remote sensing, and theoretical modeling."

The evening will start at 7:00 PM with a dessert potluck and a short business meeting immediately followed by our guest speaker.

Please bring a dessert to share. Eating utensils and drinks provided. Public welcome.
