2018 Grand Prairie Friends Native Plant Sale

Saturday May 12, 8:00 am - 1:00 pm
Inside Lincoln Square, Urbana, IL
Plant Sale Flyer

Since 1994, Grand Prairie Friends has been selling plants native to the tallgrass prairie and woodlands of east-central Illinois. Native plants beautify your home landscape, reduce maintenance, and provide important sources of nectar and food for native insects and other wildlife. Help the iconic Monarch Butterfly and plant milkweeds!

Prices are reasonable: $4 for a single pot (3 x 3 x 4 inches) or $60 for an 18-pot flat. A list of plant species that should be available can be found below. Subject to change by sale day. Cash or check only, please. All sales are final.

Native Plant Sale Volunteer Opportunities

Label Creation

One volunteer needed to create and print labels to be placed on the plant stakes. The names and counts are available by March 1. The labels need to be available by the first transplant day, April 5. Over 2000 labels are needed so a good printer is required. GPF will provide label sheets and printer cartridges as needed. Contact Diane (dianeed [at] sbcglobal [dot] net) if you are interested.

Volunteers with a willingness to work hard and get their hands dirty are needed—no experience necessary. Plants are set to be delivered April 1, and we’ll gather on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 PM—April 5, 12, 19, 26, May 3, and May 10 in the Natural Resources Study Annex (NRSA) Greenhouse, 1910 S. Griffith Dr., Champaign . This greenhouse is south of St. Mary’s Road and west of First Street to the southwest of Assembly Hall (map). Questions can be directed to Gary Russell (russell.gary [at] comcast [dot] net) or Dave Easter (d.a.easter [at] att [dot] net).

On Friday May 11, GPF needs volunteers to help load, haul, and unload plants. We'll work from 4:00 to 6:00 PM meeting first at the NRSA greenhouse. A small crew (2-3 people) will be needed at Lincoln Square to set up tables and arrange the space. If you have a truck and a strong back (or just a truck), then you're especially needed! RSVP to Diane (dianeed [at] sbcglobal [dot] net) if you can help.

Sale Day

The sale runs from 8 AM to 1 PM on May 12 inside Lincoln Square. We'll need 4-5 people over a couple of shifts to help customers pick out plants, keep tables tidy, and staple boxes. This is the fun part--sending native plants to loving homes! RSVP to Diane (dianeed [at] sbcglobal [dot] net) if you can help.

We ask that volunteers wear their turquoise GPF t-shirt on Sale Day.  If you don’t have one but would like one for $11, contact Diane (dianeed [at] sbcglobal [dot] net).

A very important task on sale day. We need six people committed to keeping track of the money. Two people on an early shift and two on a late shift. Two other volunteers are needed to make one or two bank deposit trips as needed. RSVP to Ed Wilhite (dianeed [at] sbcglobal [dot] net) if you can help.
